Freud lived during a very repressed era: was a neurologist - trained in neurology, he treated patients with hysteria - hystero-epilepsie: attaque, wrote up case study about them, treated them with hypnosis. Between the 1870s and 1900"s the number of french psychatric theses whose main topic was hysteria was high then dropped off alot in the 1910s to 1940s. Freud didnt believe people were being sexually harrassed, he believed it was in the mind due to sexual repression. His fundamental insight - that the body might be playing out the dramas in the mind - has yet to be supplanted . What happens in the mind can very much be seen through the function of the body - proven and used today. Psychologist see the mind and body as the same. Hysteria: early psychoanalytic theory: source of problem stems from the unconscious, the mind is a place of conflict, emphasis on childhood experiences, emphasis on sexuality.
