- polysyllabic words
- first syllable is important
- but how do we decide when the first syllable is formed
- if words r centered on their first syllable then its important to know when the
syllable is formed
Morphologially related words r stored together in some way
But if u store words together in terms of their syllable structure then y have a conflict
Syllabic boundary conflicts w morpholgoically syllabic boundary
- so whats been proposed is orthographically based syllabic structure
- 2013:
Informativeness of first syllabic unit
And make this one as large and informative as possible since its the most important
It does this by maximizing the coda of the 1st unit
This is the opp of the linguistic definition of the phonological unit- we maximize the
onset of the 2nd syllable
Orthographic structure (continued)
Alternative to spoken syllables in reading:
Optimise the informativeness of the first unit by maximising the coda.
thund / er tig / er lam / ent cam / el
word GENTLE coda is nt not ntl
so u can maximize coda as long as its a legal coda
This first unit is called the Basic Orthographic Syllabic Structure = BOSS.
Evidence in favour of the BOSS-->
Taft (1979): THUND ER faster lexical decision times than THUN DER
- split at syllabic level or split at morphological
- participants asked if they put together the two parts if they formed a real word
- faster when split according to BOSS rathet than spoken syllable
Taft (1987): Fragment judgement task, THUND (i.e., BOSS) easier than THUN (i.e.,
syllable). Not just a result of the greater number of letters in the BOSS, because
THUNDE (i.e., BOSS+1) not easier than THUND.
- have to decide is this the first part of the word. thund- 1st word BOSS, thun- 1st syllable .
again faster when given BOSS rather than 1st syllable
- another reason THUND is easier than THUN is cos u get more letters
