Document Summary

Mod 5, lecture 1 principles of endocrine function. Recall: there are two types of signalling determined by distance, local signalling: signalling molecules released to adjacent cells, long distance signalling: signalling molecules released over long distances. Endocrine signalling: signalling molecule used: hormones, type of signalling: long distance, hormones are released into the blood stream (via diffusion). Synaptic signalling: signalling molecule used: neurotransmitters, type of signalling: local, even though the axons of neurons can be long, the signalling is local because the actual neurotransmitters only have to travel between a synapse. Neuroendocrine signalling: signalling molecule: neurohormones, type of signalling: long distance, this is where neurohormones are secreted directly into the blood stream, once in the blood stream, the neurohormones have to travel via circulatory system to target cells. Paracrine signalling: signalling molecule: local regulators, type of signalling: local signalling, local regulators are diffused from the cell into the extracellular fluid, they target cells that are very close by to trigger a response.
