BIOL1900 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hypertrophy, Motor Skill, Thermoregulation
Document Summary
Lecture 5 child physiology and exercise responses. Effect of maturation: girls hit puberty earlier than boys, girls grow and gain weight earlier but boys continue growing after girls stop. Early vs late maturers: earlier the growth spurt - more intense rate of growth, boys - early maturers tend to be, more muscular, shorter legs, broader hips, girls - early maturers tend to be, shorter legs, narrower shoulders. Hormonal alterations at puberty: testosterone, protein synthesis, bone growth, estrogen, bone growth, fat deposition - especially in thighs and hips. Maximal oxygen consumption: girls" goes down due to increase in fat, boys" goes up due to increase in muscle. Thermoregulation: sweat rate is lower in children, reliance on convection and radiation, body surface area to mass his higher in children, more gain in hot and loss in cold environments, slower rate of heat acclimatisation. Training adaptations: children will adapt to training in the same way adults do.
