SOCY1050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Postmodernity
Lecture 1 - 28/02
Think on a macro, societal/structural level
Sociology involves philosophy, economics, psychology, biology (studies of the human
condition)
The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society
Enables us to understand the structure and dynamics of society, and their intricate
connections to patterns of human behaviour and individual life changes
Examines the ways in which social structure (communities etc) and institutions affect
human attitudes, actions, and opportunities
There is a dimension of reality that is invisible and unrecognised by most people, and
yet it controls our lives in many ways
Society = people living together with stable forms of social institutions such as
government, economy, culture, families, communities, legal systems and other social
norms and practises
Its best not to think about society in geographical terms due to globalisation
Structure is dynamic, e.g. familial structures changing quickly
Remember go beyond our own experiences
Challenge what is taken for granted
Modernity = from late 1700s/industrial revolution/enlightenment (rise of science)
Postmodernity = fragmentation of institutions, such as family, rise of consumption rather
than production, questioning of science, progress, truth etc.
Troubles vs Issues:
Troubles = personal troubles, only happen to you
Issues = things that happen in patterns on a much large scale
