BLOOD AND VESSELS
- Describe the composition and physical characteristics of blood
- List the functions of blood
- Discuss the composition and functions of plasma
- Describe the structure, function, and production of erythrocytes
- List the classes, structural characteristics, and functions of leukocytes
- Describe the process of leukocyte production
- Describe the process of hemostasis
- List the blood groups and explain blood typing
Funtctions of blood
- Blood is a liquid connective tissue
Composition of blood
Made up of cells and blood plasma
- Cellular components include = red blood cells , white blood cells( help with immune system)
and platelets( help with blood clotting) . are called the formed elements
- Plasma portion = consist of water , proteins and other solute ( anything that is dissolved in
the blood )

Red blood cells = make up major portion of formed
elements , are thin in the centre and light can
penetrate through
Functions and properties of blood
- Blood transports oxygen , c02 , nutrients ,
hormones , remove wastes
- Blood regulates homeostasis of all body fluids, ph , temp and water content of cells
- Blood protects against excessive loss by clotting and against infections through the use of
white blood cells
Lymphocytes = white blood cells are able to live for years
- The number of red blood cells and platelets remains stead but the number of white blood
cells varies depending on invading pathogens ( if we have infection they will multiply )
Producing blood
- The process of producing blood is hemiparesis. They differentiate from pluripotent stem
cells.
Red blood cells
- Contain haemoglobin – that is used to carry oxygen to cells
- Red blood cells do not have a nucleus – allows for cells to efficiently carry oxygen
themselves ( the shape also helps )
- Haemoglobin = is also involved in regulating blood flow and blood pressure.
