6529 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Pancreatic Juice, Gastric Acid, Common Hepatic Artery

42 views9 pages
Gastrointestinal System Continued
1. describe the composition and functions of saliva
2. name the cell types responsible for secreting the various components of gastric juice and
indicate the importance of each component in stomach activity
3 phases of stimulatory and
inhibitory events
Cephalic
(reflex) phase
your brain,
sight of food
will stimulate
receptors in
nervous
system. It can
be turned off with loss of appetite or depression.
Gastric phase – stuff that happens in stomach. When food is in the stomach, it uses
stretch receptors and uses nerves and hormones.

Intestinal phase – stuff in intestines, is a brief stimulate effect as partially digested food
will enter the duodenum. We let a little bit in then shut it. Under neural and hormonal
control.
3. describe the role of the accessory organs and their secretions in digestion
Liver = is the largest gland in the body. Have 4 lobes
-Is made up of hepatocytes cells and they sit in a series of plates radiating out of a vein.
- Portal triads consist of – bile duct, hepatic artery
Functions of liver
- Helps to regulate blood glucose levels
- Synthesise and storage of amino acids , proteins , vitamins and fats
- Detoxify your blood.
- Bile drainage and also produces bile. Bile is a yellow green solution that is a detergent
that breaks down big chunks of fat so that enzymes can then do its job.
Pancreas = made up of tail, body and head and lies deep to the greater curvature of the
stomach.
Has an exocrine function and endocrine function
Exocrine = secrets alkaline pancreatic juice – it is super important!! Alkaline helps to bring
up acidity and the pancreatic juice holds lots of digestive enzymes.
Endocrine = release of insulin and glucagon – helps us to regulate blood sugar levels.

Inside is made up of acidic which contain zymogen granules
which old the digestive enzymes
Gallbladder= the liver will produced bile which will then travel
to the gall balder were it will be stored.
- The gall bladder is a green muscular sac
Regulation of pancreas secretion
Need to regulate enzymes pumping into stomach.
