Neural pathways – only need an understanding
- Understand the organisation of neural pathways
- Differentiate between the perceptual, circuit and receptor levels of the neural pathways
- Define sensory receptors and their classifications by location and by structure
- Describe proprioceptors and their structural classifications
- Provide examples of receptors in the body and the stimulus to which they respond
- Explain the concept of receptor adaptation
- Describe first, second, and third order neurons of the circuit level
- Briefly describe the ascending sensory nerve tracts and the function of each
- Briefly describe the descending motor nerve tracts and the function of each
- Differentiate between upper and lower motor neurons

Sensation
Have 2 terms:
- Sensation is the conscious or subconscious awareness of changes in the external or internal
environment.

- Perception is the conscious interpretation of sensations performed mainly by the cerebral
cortex. Sensory info comes in an ascend cerebral cortex and then we can perceive. Can also
perceive sound or smell for bad/good experiences done by the cerebral cortex

Sensory
information - 3
levels
Receptor level
= have sensory
receptors
(specialised
cells) that react
to stimulus by
collecting
information
and passing on
the CNS. The
receptor
detects
stimulus and
action
potential is
illicit
Circuit level = nerve tracks which carry information. Action potential comes from receptors
to circuit (along highway)
Perceptual level = where information is gathered by the thalamus and sorted and sent to
appropriate area and decoded. Just sensory information
Sensation
- Each type of sensation is called a sensory modality. This includes: touch, pain, vision and
hearing.
- Sensory modalities are grouped into either general senses or special senses.
- General senses: somatic-(tactile, thermal, proprioceptive); visceral pressure, chemicals,
stretch, nausea, hunger, temperature.
- Special senses: smell, taste, vision, hearing and equilibrium.
- Different types of sensory receptors are involved in the different senses. Sensation

Document Summary

Differentiate between the perceptual, circuit and receptor levels of the neural pathways. Define sensory receptors and their classifications by location and by structure. Provide examples of receptors in the body and the stimulus to which they respond. Describe first, second, and third order neurons of the circuit level. Briefly describe the ascending sensory nerve tracts and the function of each. Briefly describe the descending motor nerve tracts and the function of each. Sensation is the conscious or subconscious awareness of changes in the external or internal environment. Perception is the conscious interpretation of sensations performed mainly by the cerebral cortex. Sensory info comes in an ascend cerebral cortex and then we can perceive. Can also perceive sound or smell for bad/good experiences done by the cerebral cortex. = have sensory receptors (specialised cells) that react to stimulus by collecting information and passing on the cns. The receptor detects stimulus and action potential is illicit.
