The Purpose of Listening
1. Multifaceted
To learn
To relate integral to healthy relationships
To influence we are willing to listen to someone’s advice if we believe they listen to and know us - if
you project this to the children you teach, you will win them over - develops trust between teacher
and student - helping and caring skill
To play
To help a pre-requisite for feedback. Sometimes just listening is a help.
2. Integral feature of relationships
3. Integrate strategy and tool of any effective teacher (Can add to exam on topic of effective teaching)
4. The distinction between hearing an listening - catches the notion of attentiveness - when you convert
hearing into listening it is attentiveness
5. Teaching repertoire - we learn a lot about people around us, about a subject matter and life
6. Concept of mindfulness - the more we are mindful/attentive, the better out prospects of learning are
The Process of Listening
1. Use these skills to recall the knowledge of the children
2. We evaluate as we listen
3. Responding by providing feedback - intricate process
Listening
- Effective listening is not automatic it requires concentrated effort.
- My view is that it is a skill in decline.
- Effective listeners are sometimes referred to as “assertive” listeners they let the speaker know that they
have not only heard but listened and that they have been understood.
- We need to jettison bad habits when it comes to listening.
- Listening is the “siamese twin” of speaking!
- Need to be very conscious of listening as a skill when talking with individuals and when engaged in
whole class discussion
- Requires a degree of emotional intelligence
- Listen and respond - develops relationship with students
Three major elements of Listening
- Attending Skills
- Responding Skills
- Paraphrasing
Attending Skills
- Drawing from the work of Psychology and Counselling
- Attending- “attentive”
- By its very nature it demands a sense of pastoral care
- Again it speaks to us of “genuine” communication
