What is Direct Instruction and Explicit Instruction?
• Direct Instruction (DI) is a model for teaching that emphasizes well-developed and carefully
planned lessons designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and
prescribed teaching tasks. It is based on the theory that clear instruction elimination
misinterpretations can greatly improve and accelerate learning (Engelmann & Carnine, 1982)
o Mastery, success, systematic and consistency
o Scripted lessons – Word for word
o Students demonstrate that they know what you have taught them
o ‘Repetition is the mother of memory’ → Engelmann – Direct Instruction
o Hattie → If you don’t set students up with these skills in primary, they cannot be self
directed/regulated. As they grow up, we need more enquiry and open ended tasks
• Explicit instruction refers to teacher-centered instruction that is focused on clear behavioral and
cognitive goals and outcomes. These in turn are made ‘explicit’ or transparent to learners.
