- The types of health care procedures you may encounter include:
General Health Care Procedures
Specialised Health Care Procedures
Low Incidence Health Care Procedures
- The internet for may be useful for information on specific disorders and disabilities and the health care
needed to support the student.
General Health Care Procedures - These are procedures that may be required for all students.
- They include:
Infection Control
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
First Aid
- These may occur in a number of settings and need to be a skill acquired by all who have contact with
the students.
Infection Control- Needed to:
Prevent the spread of disease to other students
Prevent infection of school staff
- Infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and parasitic worms.
- Immunisation is an example of infection control. These produce antibodies to the disease.
- Consultation with other professionals may be needed.
- Infections can be spread through droplets (sneezing), secretion (blood, urine, mucus) or ingestion (food).
- Some procedures include hand washing and washing of shared items.
- Controlling infections means that students miss less school time especially those who are more
susceptible!

What can you do? - Teach students about the correct way to wash their hands, blow their nose, sneeze
etc.

- Particularly relevant for Early Childhood settings (but relevant to all settings).
- Create awareness among students of germs and how to control them.
- Discuss how different people may be affected differently (those with reduced immunity, etc).
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- An emergency procedure used when breathing or breathing and pulse are not evident.
- It is an emergency response. It should not be attempted without having undergone relevant training!! It
may injure or kill if performed incorrectly.
- Used when other assistance is on the way.
- May be needed due to injury, suffocation (toys, food), smoke inhalation, infections.
- Severe disability = increased likelihood of need
Need to start within 4 minutes of pulse and breathing stopping to avoid brain damage.
First Aid
- Emergency assistance to those who are injured or in distress before professionals arrive
- Teachers often pick up on signs of distress and the need for first aid.
- Anticipation and planning for potential situations is important, as is prevention.
- Procedures and policies must be consistent with State and Commonwealth requirements.
- Specific plans need to put into place for students with identified health problems, and permission from
the parent to treat the student.
- Cultural and language issues may also need to be addressed in a school health plan
First Aid Situations
- Some of the situations where first aid will need to be administered in a classroom situation may include:
Burns
Insect bites/stings-Snake bite
Sprains, strains, dislocation, bruising
Abrasions, lacerationsPuncture wound
- In addition to these you may also have to deal with:
Epileptic fits
Asthma attacks
Loss of consciousness
