1. Identifying Children’s Interests, Strengths and Needs

2. Choosing the focus Skill & identifying learning outcomes
Focus on a couple of skills from each category per term.
Developing proficiency takes time.
Focus and Assess on a few skills at time - even though you students will be using many.
By the end of the K-3 phase students should have had the opportunity to master all 22 skills
Assess the skills that you focus on.
You will not assess every skill, every year.
Age related, not age dependant
Step 3: Assess each child’s FMS
- The analysis of movement skill is a critical component of many disciplines and professions.
- Accurate information about the skill level of participants
- This information should be based on assessment that is valid, comprehensive, educative, fair and explicit.
- Measures the effectiveness of our movement programs
Gathering Information
- Considerations:
- Range of settings - informal and formal
- Lots of different experiences - different contexts and proficiencies in different settings
- Over time
- Open (Game setting) vs closed (isolation)
- Differences between open and closed performances
- Qualitative we are concerned about the quality
Analysing Movement Things to remember
- Systematic - Method consistency (Same procedure each time)
- Continually update - fluid documents
- Resource - Range of strategies
- Observation Record
The Observation Record - Observing a movement
- Global check
Is the movement smooth and rhythmical?
Does the movement look right?
Does the movement achieve its purpose?
Is the child confident?
Are they achieving the level of the year group?
What does the Global check tell you?
