Symptons of autism can be present now or have happened in the past. 2 areas of difficulty: social communication, restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests (sensory within this) Always ask what are they trying to get to/away from. Lifelong difficulties in this area, may cause great anxiety and frustration. Strategy instruction: soda stop, observe, deliberate, act. Strategies: replacing with more appropriate, modelling, role play. Must determine what is rewarding for the student, not just what you think may be rewarding. These are skills which will have high utility (function) for the student in their current and future situations. These may be skills such as handling money, asking for directions, following a timetable, ordering food, shopping at a supermarket or filling in forms.
