Formative Assessment
- Helps to improve student outcomes
- Not necessarily a graded test
- Information to help child improve final result
- Helps form their learning process to get an improved learning result at the end
Assessment
- Part 1 - Essay
o Research
o The more research, the better, as long as it matches/enhances the answer
o + or – 10% (1080-1320)
o Suggested structure for your paper
▪ Introduction (200 words)
▪ Literature Review, refer to at least 4 peer reviewed articles (500)
▪ Discussion (300-500 words)
▪ Conclusion (200 words)
o How does feedback help students improve? Type of feedback?
o What does the research say about providing formative feedback?
o What are the best ways?
o How does it help kids learn/improve their results?
- Part 2-4 - Writing Objectives, designing assessment strategies, and providing feedback
o Choose achievement standard
o Write 3 objectives relating to the task → No more than 3!
▪ More interested in the knowledge and skills
▪ What do they know and learn?
▪ What will they be able to learn as a result of this lesson
▪ Don’t tell me what they are going to do, tell me what they are going to
learn
• “Students will be able to read the article about capital cities”
• “Students will be able to list the capital cities”
▪ Start with a verb
• “Students will be able to…”
o then add verb
o DON’T use the word understand, recognise
o Can use “show their understanding by…”
▪ Construct, create, illustrate, match, order, compare
o Keep it simple
▪ Measurable and observable
• This is what you’re assessing
o Look at work samples
▪ Print the work sample off and include it in your assignment
o Provide Effective Feedback
▪ Feedback is going to the student
▪ Don’t do comments on example, and then add another paragraph
• Too much work
