Lecture Seven: NAPLAN
Abstract
-In 2008, the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in
Australian schools.
-Every year, all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests
in numeracy.
-An individual report is provided to parents and caregivers for each student.
-The results show student’s achievements against a national average and school scores are
posted on My School Website
-The tests are developed by ACARA . Classroom teachers are responsible for administering the
tests in school time
-All students in the designated grades are required to sit the test with possible exception of
students with significant intellectual disability
Why NAPLAN?
-Pressures of various kinds – political, economic, social led the government to gain greater
accountability from schools. There was a sense in the community that students were not doing
well in basic skills of literacy and numeracy.
-The attraction of NAPLAN was that it was a standardised test (similar to that used in the USA)
which allowed a MEASUREMENT to be taken and it provided a comparable study between states
to be undertaken.
-Previously each state had their own testing system but NAPLAN provided the opportunity for all
children across all states to be tested by the same standardised test.
-(Brady and Kennedy, 2012)
-Australia is still progressing at low levels
-Used as an entry into private schools
