EXSS1010 Lecture 9: EXSS1010 – INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND METABOLIC WORK
EXSS1010 – INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND METABOLIC WORK
LECTURE OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the influence exercise duration and intensity can have on energy systems
contribution
2. Explain how energy expenditure can be measured in humans
3. Understand the relationship between oxygen consumption and energy expenditure
4. Be able to calculate energy expenditure from oxygen consumption
5. Define the factors that influence daily energy expenditure
6. Explain the MET and discuss how it can be used to measure physical activity
ENERGY TRANSFER DURING EXERCISE
ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE (ATP)
• Cells’ to ajo eeg- transforming activities:
o Extract potential energy from food and conserve it within the bonds of ATP
o Extract and transfer the chemical energy in ATP to power biologic work
ENERGY RELEASE MACRONUTRIENTS
ATP RESYNTHESIS
• ATP-PCr (Anaerobic)
o High intensity exercise of short duration requires immediate energy from
intramuscular ATP and PCr
• Glycolytic(Anaerobic)
o Energy during intense, short-duration exercise
o Patial eakdo of stoed usle gloge & gluose CHO → puate
o Results in lactate production
• Oxidative Phosphorylation (Aerobic)
