EXSS1010 - MUSCLE ARCHITECTURE
MUSCLE ARCHITECTURE
• Muscles can differ structurally by modifications in:
o Fascial arrangement
o Fibre type
• Muscles have differing directional arrangement of muscle fascicles/fibers
• Direction of muscle fibers reflects function of muscle
• Two basic formations
o Fusiform - high speed
o Pennate high force
MUSCLE FIBRE TYPES
• Three muscle fibres
o Type I, lla, llx
• Biochemical properties
o Oxidative capacity
o Type of ATPase
• Contractile Properties
o Maximal force production
o Speed of contraction
o Muscle fiber efficiency
Slow fibres (110ms)
• Type 1 fibres
o Slow twitch fibres
o Slow-oxidative fibres
o ~50% of fibres in an average muscle
Fast fibers (50ms)
• Type llx fibers
o Fast-twitch fibers
o Fast-glycolytic
• Type lla fibers
o Intermediate fibers
o Fast-oxidative glycolytic
• ~25% of fibres in an average muscle
