HUBS1108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Sacrospinous Ligament, Obturator Canal, Buttocks
HUBS1108 - PELVIS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES - PELVIS
• List the bones that contribute to the bony pelvis and pelvic girdle (Review from skeleton
lecture).
• Identify the bony markings of the hip and sacral bones
• List and classify the joints of the bony pelvis.
• Describe the ligaments present in the pelvic girdle.
• Distinguish between the greater and lesser pelvis, and list the contents of each. Describe the
blood supply and venous drainage of the pelvis
• Describe the inputs and outputs of the sacral and coccygeal plexuses
PELVIC GIRDLE
• Connects lower limb to axial skeleton
• Supports the weight of the upper body
• 3 bones
o Hip(pelvic)bones
o Sacrum(axial skeleton)
• Strongest ligaments in the body
PELVIS AND PERINEUM
• Regions associated with the pelvic bones and the terminal parts of the vertebral column
• The pelvic cavity contains elements of the urinary, gastrointestinal and reproductive systems
o The pelvic cavity has an inlet, an outlet, walls and a floor

GREATER AND LESSER PELVIS
• Greater Pelvis
o Superior parts of the pelvic bones
o Considered part of the abdominal cavity
o False pelvis
• Lesser Pelvis
o Inferior parts of the pelvic bones, the sacrum and coccyx
o Inlet and outlet
o Contains the pelvic organs
o True pelvis

PELVIC (HIP) BONES
• Components:
• 3 distinct bones separated by cartilage at birth, fuse at 6-18 years to become a single bone.
• Ilium
o Superior
• Beige
• Pubis
o Anterior and inferior
• Red/Pink
o Body, superior ramus and inferior ramus
• Ischium
o Posterior and inferior
• Blue

Document Summary
List the bones that contribute to the bony pelvis and pelvic girdle (review from skeleton lecture). Identify the bony markings of the hip and sacral bones. List and classify the joints of the bony pelvis: describe the ligaments present in the pelvic girdle, distinguish between the greater and lesser pelvis, and list the contents of each. Describe the blood supply and venous drainage of the pelvis: describe the inputs and outputs of the sacral and coccygeal plexuses. Pelvic girdle: connects lower limb to axial skeleton, 3 bones. Supports the weight of the upper body: hip(pelvic)bones, sacrum(axial skeleton) Greater and lesser pelvis: greater pelvis, superior parts of the pelvic bones, considered part of the abdominal cavity (cid:862)false(cid:863) pelvis. Inferior parts of the pelvic bones, the sacrum and coccyx. Inlet and outlet: contains the pelvic organs (cid:862)true(cid:863) pelvis. Pelvic (hip) bones: components, 3 distinct bones separated by cartilage at birth, fuse at 6-18 years to become a single bone.
