Document Summary

Lecture 10: ventilation and perfusion of the lungs. Ventilation of the lungs: when we breath in and out, not all the lung is ventilated equally. Some alveoli are better ventilated than others: regional ventilation is greater at the base of the lung compared with the apex (effect of gravity, ventilation depends on lung (alveolar) compliance and the resistance of the conducting airways. Intrapleural pressure is more negative at the apex compared with the base. Therefore alveoli at the base are relatively under-inflated compared with the apex. However alveoli at the base of the lung is on a steeper part of the pressure volume curve, hence the change in volume is greater and more air is drawn in. The pulmonary circulation handles the same co as the systemic circulation but in a different way. Uses resistance to control bf (many arteries are actually closed at any 1 time)
