HUBS1404 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Immunosenescence, Presbycusis, Irreversible Process
Document Summary
Australia"s and the world"s population structures are dramatically changing. In the next few years the number of elderly will be more than the number of children: big burden on healthcare - unhealthy ageing, perfect scenario - age very heathliy and then die. Why do we age: average median lifespan has increased dramatically over the last 100 years; it is now starting to plateau, brain atrophy, vision defects, alopecia canities. Immunosenescence (gradual deterioration of immune system: alopecia = loss of hear, canities = greying of hair - loss of pigment. Skin ageing: presbycusis (hearing loss, cardiac ageing, osteoporosis (fragile bones) Heterogeneity in ageing: heterogeneity - ageing uniformly across population, test score here is for memory, as we age memory function deteriorates - but there are some exceptions (successful ageing) Healthy ageing in the goal - health span: not that interested in increasing life span - want to increase health span. "evolution coddles you when young and forsakes you when old"
