HUBS1406 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Thyroid, Hypoglycemia, Endocrinology
Document Summary
Every release of hormone is a negative feedback loop, except oxytocin in labour, which is a positive feedback system. Hypothalamus receives message- thyrotropin releasing hormone (trh)- nervous system. Sent to pituitary gland- thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh)- endocrine system. Travels down to the pituitary gland- brings about the release of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (acth). Bob is seeing an endocrinologist for his problem, as he has been feeling very weak. He also has low blood pressure and is hypoglycaemic. It is odd, because he looks quite tanned and healthy, even though he doesn"t feel healthy. (i) (ii) (iii) During testing, bob"s blood levels of both crh and acth were shown to be very high. The nervous and endocrine system both operate to coordinate and control function of our various organs, in order to maintain homeostasis. The hypothalamus and the pituitary are where the nervous system and the endocrine system join up and work together. Sarah, aged 10, was extremely small for her age.
