SPTH3002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Inferior Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle, Cranial Nerves, Leading Edge
Document Summary
Paying attention to food and identifying if it looks appetizing or not. Visual stimulation (cn ii) and olfaction - the eyes giving the stimulus of something looking good and the smell of the food. Submandibular and sublingual glands - innervated by cn vii. Laryngeal closure through innervation of recurrent laryngeal nerve branch of vagus nerve (cn x) - interarytenoid and cricoarytenoid. Eating behaviour - whether feeding somebody or they are feeding themselves; as well as the visual stimuli provided. Lips are sealed to avoid the food from coming out. Nasal airway stays open to allow respiration - it would be uncomfortable if had to hold breath while chewing food as it takes time. Liquids is kept in the mouth for a much shorter time compared to food. Don"t require chewing or preparation in the mouth - like turning into bolus. Sensory recognition of food is critical - taste, texture and temperature of food.
