You may have considered that businesses exist to employ people, to support the community, to meet the needs and wants of individuals, to make money for the business owner, or to benefit the society in which it operates. There is no one correct answer and the answer provided to this question is likely to differ accordingly to who you ask. Competing paradigms have existed throughout history, and what we know as the mainstream business model now does not exist in all parts of the world and may not exist in ten, fifty or one hundred years. Drawing on the suggestion by dr sykes that there are multiple ways of conducting business, it is important to acknowledge that these are premised on various mental models and ways of thinking. We can draw on the systems thinking lecture to highlight that there are multiple ways of thinking, and no one right way exists.
