Introduction
• It is possible to be taught but not learn
• Might not give specific enough instruction
o Can lead to frustration & anger issues
• Must be paying attention to if students are fully engaged
o Why or why not?
Quality Teacher Characteristics
• As a future teacher, must find ‘what school culture works for me?’
o Guided instruction
o Rules/regulations
o Must fit in with school environment
o Consider dynamics
• Must get to know families
o Care about students, not just test scores
o Knowing family opens window for you to get help with behavioral management
from time to time with specific children
o Makes parents more invested in their child’s learning

• Not every child comes from a home
• “the tree is the seed and we can’t crush seeds before they have the opportunity to
grow”
• without significant relationships, significant learning doesn’t take place
• school isn’t everything
o not worth it if you flunk at life
• educators:
o anyone who touches life of a child (doesn’t have to be a teacher)
o bus drivers, custodians, nurse
▪ may get to know kids better than the teachers
▪ see if lights are off in house, drive around to give kid more time
▪ janitors see everything
