Document Summary

Genetics term that refers to the study of genes and their roles in inheritance. Process done to manipulate the genome of an organism in order to produce desired traits. 2 strategies include up-regulation, which is the process of a cell increasing the quantity of a cellular component such as rna or protein, in response to an external variable and down-regulation, which is v. v. Promoter: a region of dna that initiates transcription of a particular gene. Transcription factor: (sequence-specific dna-binding factor) is a protein that binds to specific dna sequences, thereby controlling the rate of transcription of genetic information from dna to messenger rna. Mrna for a specific gene, thus stopping production of protein. This is a therapeutic approach to treat infectious diseases or genetic disorders, such as those that result from the inappropriate and undesirable activity of a gene, as in many cancers.
