- Greek world Is the Aegean but there are other cities with infusion of Greek culture (Greek-ish
Hellenistic)
- Alexander the Great died in 323 31 B.C. (Hellenistic Period)
- The 33 Years Alexander was on Earth isn’t important – but the circumstances he was put in was
significant (i.e. having been to India, etc.)
- We want to look at the Hellenistic period with the fourth century.
- There are two characteristic phenomenon’s in this period:
- Kings New supra political power Before we had city states, now we have kings as
well. I.e Alexander was king.
- Leagues City states grouping together to get things done as a league/confederacy.
- We see the emergence of a supra polis political power distribution.
- Now big picture politics is considered as an “international” thing.
- Second Athenian Confederacy is essentially another Athenian league (like the Delian league).
- Battle of Chaeronea Unity of most of the Greeks vs Macedons (Phillip of Macedon)
Second Athenian Confederacy:
- Events mean nothing if you can’t identify their themes.
- Head of the league was Athens.
- It was a structure of a hegemon (leader, supremacy) Which was Athens. The rest were allies.
Clearly, the power structure was one at top and equal city states (allies).
- It was started to fight against the Persians.
- Leagues in the 4th century can be seen as the alternative OF or TO an empire Either there to
construct an empire or to go against other empires.
- Delian league originated after the Persian Wars. Sparta behaved a little too cocky (showed through
passage of Thucydides) and the Athenians stepped in and formed this league. It lasted until 404
478 it started.
-In the 4th century leagues go through a ‘boom’ period Many more expand and are created.
- Second Athenian League 378/7 B.C.
- “For the good fortune of the Athenians and the allies of the Athenians. So that the Spartans shall
allow the Greeks to be free and autonomous, and to live at peace occupying their own territory in
security [[and so that the peace and friendship sworn by the Greeks and the King in accordance with
the agreement may be in force and endure.]] be it decreed by the people: ((THUCYDIDES))
Epigraphic language. Main objective is Athenians and allies VS Spartans, wanting to secure the peace
agreed by the king. Basically the same problem as the Peloponnesian war.
- prospective allies… free and autonomous… free government, no garrison, no governor, no
tribute… ‘on the same terms as the Chians and the Thebans and the other allies’. ALLIES ONLY
ENTER LEAGUE AS AUTONOMOUS STATES
- no Athenian possession, public or private, abroad
- unfavourable stelai to be demolished
- no property, public or private, for Athenians abroad
- Support in war, by land and by sea
