ANTH1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Social Fact
Week 5: SPACES, HOUSES AND GENDER (1): Culture and Holism
• A Culture OR Cultural Life:
o Case studies of Pitjantjatjara, Catadores, Nuer have identfied issues of difference
between the site of study of culture and its wider environment.
o But the case studies have also identified the value of analyzing separate systems or
forms of integration that structure our cultural life
• Holism:
o We call this perspective on culture that emphasizes integration: Holism
o Nuer – cattle as a total social fact: as a form of value that integrates livelihood, religion,
kinship and politics
o Pitjantjatjara – Country and Kinship
o Catadores: the local relationship between understanding the dump, ways of making a
living, and community
o Remember Holism is always a simplification of reality to allow us to think about it.
o While systems in reality are internally integrated they are always connected with other
systems
• Space as Holism:
o The way language, gender, ecology, livelihood and architecture are integrated as a
spatial system.
• Space as Material:
o We can also say that people, in the way that they live together, make space
o What are the main processes by which Samo make space?
• Monsoon as Shared:
o Building the house
o Living in the house
