High renaissance all about balance and harmony, yet an artificial construct: renaissance (rebirth) revival of the classical past. Giorgio vasari (florence) art theorist (first monumental coherent history of art). Inspired by classical antiquity to write about history of art and biographies: main court artists for the duke of florence. Italy is a collection of the city states. Florence establishing itself as the centre of tuscany (political change) 3 stages: infancy (14th), adolescence (15th) and maturity (16th) progressive narrative of history (mostly about florence) Giotto inventor of the new way of painting. Masaccio, michelangelo: his view is biased; however, the are truths within it, da vinci leonardo initiated the modern manner of painting (the grace, fluentness of the modern manner) Reformation of the latin language by looking back to classical writing. Leads to renewed enthusiasm for classical architecture/sculpture moral virtue worth imitating. The usability of the classical art reworking the past to serve contemporary purposes/functions.
