Students will be able to identify the diverse perception of animals across cultures including indigenous cultures. At times we may have the expectation that different cultures should have the same perception on factual aspects related to the same animal but this is not necessarily the case. There are many different factors and one of them is how you may perceive that sound and what sounds your own language allows you to make to imitate the sound. Example of the signi cance of animals for aboriginal australians: totems. A totem is a natural object, plant, or animal that is inherited by members of a clan or family as their spiritual emblem. Related to animals, plants, landscape features & weather. Vary from one language group to another and also depending on the traditional stories from the area. Individuals can have at least 4 totems (nation, clan, family group, personal) It shows a strong relationship between humans and animals.
