Document Summary

Describe the concept of trophic levels: trophic level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food chain. A food chain is a succession of organisms that eat other organisms and may, in turn, be eaten themselves: the trophic level of an organism is the number of steps it is from the start of the chain. Explain how energy flows within ecosystems: food chains describe energy flow between organisms among trophic levels. Living organisms can use energy in two forms: radiant and fixed energy. Radiant energy is in the form of electromagnetic waves, such as light. Fixed energy is potential chemical energy bound in various organic substances which can be broken down to release their energy content: autotrophs produce organic molecules from inorganic substances. Longer food chains less stable because: fluctuations at low trophic levels magnify at high levels. Top predators more likely to go extinct.
