BIOL3007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Tree Hollow, Niche Differentiation, Biotic Component
Document Summary
At least two species and they use the same limited resource, or seek the same resource. The direct interaction is not between the two organisms, rather it is between the resource and organism. There is an indirect interaction between the two organisms. Resource competition: scramble or exploitive competition, where the resource is limited (water, tree hollow etc. Interference competition: contest or encounter competition, resource in common is not limited but individuals harm each other getting to it (e. g. to get females, harems etc. Can predict survival and response to such resources: But, you may need to bring two species into the same resources. Trials can then be used to test predictions. Can then be used to see if the models and trials predict the real world by natural silicon and phosphate ratios (i. e. look at the percentage of one species and plot this against the nutrient ratio). Competition can be described by mechanism and emphasizes the role of resources.
