EXSS2021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, Peripheral Artery Disease
Document Summary
Cholesterol is a naturally occurring molecule in cell membrane. > cholesterol accumulation = transported by lpl/hdl in bloodstream = need more ldl to carry. Hdl carries cholesterol to the liver to be excreted. Temporarily occludes one or more arteries (angina pectoris) or total occlusion (acute myocardial infarction) Blockage in brain = cerebral vascular accident. > foam cells die and release debris to the wall > calcify float away to cause clot. Lipoproteins = high density (hdl), low density (ldl), very low density (vldl) Apoprotein content of these molecules inhibits metabolism of these fats. Hdl: transfers cholesterol from tissue to liver = bile > excretion, hdl apoprotein = apo a-i, a-ii. Ldl: formed after vldl releases tgs to body cells, takes cholesterol to body cells. Poor diet - high saturated fat, obesity, high dietary cholesterol. Saturated: short, medium and long chain (butter, cheese, lard, meat, coconut oil) Monounsaturated: oleic, elaidic (avocado, canola, olive oil, egg yolk)
