EXSS3050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: 18 Months, Gait Abnormality, Gait Training
Document Summary
Types of oa: 2 main types of oa, with differing causes, idiopathic osteoarthritis no identifiable cause, may be localized (confined to 1 or, secondary osteoarthritis caused by an underlying condition, (i. e. joint injury); 2 joints) or generalized (present in 3+ joints). Less prevalent as there are now increased risk factors other bone & joint conditions (e. g. , rheumatoid arthritis, gout), or a medical condition, (i. e. diabetes or congenital disorder). Related to underlying condition: oa affects articular cartilage (composed of chrondrocytes + matrix, oa is when the articular cartilage degenerates. Oa symptoms: pain main symptom is joint pain that is worse with activity & relieved by rest. In severe cases, pain may also occur at rest/at night. Usually occurs near affected joint; however, may be referred to other areas. I. e. pain of hip oa may be felt in the lower thigh or at knee (so be careful not to diagnose as knee pain if actually hip oa).
