Parties are seen as self-interested, least trusted institutions. Parties let people know who to vote for- makes voting easier. If you didn"t have parties you would have to do research on each one. Politicians have little incentive for the long term- get want to win elections (individual politicians have short time horizons) Parties have longer time horizons- care about their reputations - want to govern well.
