Objections (Glover 67-68)
1. Using an unborn child as a commodity
Is the child merely being treated as a means?
Glover: first, you cannot violate the autonomy of a baby. Second, not merely a
means because many parents want another child anyways
2. Many embryos will be destroyed. Some critics argue that these embryos deserve respect.
But hat if…
- You have a child to compensate for the death of child number one?
- Or you have a child to use an organ rather than to use it umbilical cells?
- Or you have a savior child and then put it up for adoption?
- In these cases, the Kantian objection looks much stronger. But would it be worse if these
people did not exist? Are they lucky to be alive nonetheless?
Paretal poer oer deelopet, or hat right had you to deterie hat I like?
- To what extent should parents be free to shape the identity of their children?
- Is prenatal manipulation different/worse than:
Choosing schools/homeschooling?
Academic pressure?
Emphasising values?
Bringing up kids in a small unpopular religion?
o Bryan Caplan
- Yes, I ish to loe self ad raise the a as  so. Seriously. I want to experience
the sublime bond I'm sure we'd share. I'm confident that he'd be delighted, too, because
I would love to be raised by me. I'm not pushing others to clone themselves. I'm not
asking anyone else to pay for my dream. I just want government to leave me and the
cloning business alone. Is that too uh to ask?
Is that egotistic?
