Body integrity identity order (xenomelia)
- Healthy individuals perceive one or more of their limbs or organs as alien to the rest of
their body and wish to have it amputated

- 63% of them said they would feel their true self when having a limb amputated
What causes it?
- No one knows but may be dysfunction in the right superior parietal lobule
Treatment
- Psychotherapy (65%)
None had found decrease in desire
50% had not told therapist
- Antidepressants: SSRIs (e.g. fluoxetine) or clomipramine (31%)
None had found decrease in desire
Few could recall dose
Complete amputation
- 17% had amputated an arm or leg
6 self-amputated via shotgun, chainsaw, wood chipper or dry ice
