First procedures were reconstructive - plastic surgery from 1000, in india to refix a person"s nose, cut off as punishment. In the 15the century it was reported on the european continent. The emergence of plastic surgery is linked to the dev of medicine and changing cultural notions of the body. Prior 1846 before ether and chloroform it was done without anesthesia. If patient or physician did not die from shock, loss of blood, infection. The body was thought to be a manifestation of the relationship between god and man and disease a consequence of immortality or sin. Thus surgical intervention took a blasphemous manner disturbing the natural order. 20th century: medical practise to billion dollar industry. Following the world wars surgeons tied to fix mutilated faces and body parts. Plastic surgery became associated with deserving heros-it became a respectable field of science.
