Could be loyalism or chance to make money: go into exile. Sign an address to a british official, e. g. welcoming them to a place. 20,000 americans enlisted in the loyalist units over the course of the war. Why many historians call it a civil war. Former thought is that after the establishing of the declaration of independence, victory was inevitable.
