How did the revolutionary war became another european empirical war. Although the french were the americans only formal partner, by 1780 the dutch and the spanish contributed. Therefore britain had a large force to contend with. Britain did establish a basis for themselves as the biggest empire in the 19th c, the victorian empire on which the sun never set. Historians have come to consider the role of the french as crucial for the success of the patriots. When viewing the war in the context of ongoing global battles, america becomes highly connected to empirical wars. Therefore the war wasn"t as insular and exceptional just to america. Spanish never formerly allied but instead allied with france with its war with britain. Britain declared war on france after they allied with america. It"s odd that they chose to help the american cause. Both had monarchical governments and held imperial territories, so where is their motive.
