Local and regional variations are often as important as national variation. Most people tend not to move further than 15 miles from their birthplace. County system were important in delineating cultural and language groups and political representation. Kingdoms and dependencies: 1603 union of crowns (house of stuart james i, 1707 union of kingdoms (scotland governed from westminster parliament, wales integrated into english state since 16th c. Ireland ruled as a constitutional dependency of england 15th c. not formally integrated until union of 1801 creates united kingdom of great britain and ireland. Therefore ireland was not a part of the uk officially, but ruled from a distance during the 18th c.
