HSBH1007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Economic Evaluation, Disability-Adjusted Life Year, Disease Burden
Document Summary
Introduction: experimental studies relative risk, hazard ratio, observational studies odds ratio. Solving health problems: who got the disease? i. e. 30yo man, when did they get the disease? i. e. when on central coast, where did they get the disease? i. e. overseas. If the hypothesis is exposure causes disease: b = exposed but doesn"t get the disease, a (& d) would have the most, c = not exposed & does get the diease. Incidence: proportion (denoted as i) of a specific, disease-free population developing a particular disease in a specific study period. I is a number between 0 & 1; if multiplied by 100 it is a : tells us the probability of a new onset of disease among those at risk for developing illness. Measures of quality of life: quality-adjusted life year (qaly): measure of disease burden, including both quality & quantity of life lived. Used in economic evaluation to assess the value for money of medical interventions.
