Children more likely (3-13 yrs) for a bacterial acute sore throat. Irritation in throat and lungs, dry cough, shivering, sweating, muscle aches. Acute bacterial sinusitis follows upper (usually viral) respiratory tract infection in (. 5-5%) of cases. Will respond without antibiotics in about 2 weeks. Antibiotics may slightly shorten duration of symptoms. Rhinitis is inflammation of the lining of the nose causing congestion, runny nose, sneezing and itching. Nasal decongestants, saline nasal spray and steam inhalation provide symptomatic relief. Anti histamines and intra nasal corticosteroids are not generally indicated. Second most frequently self reportedcondition in australia. Patients generally have a personal and family history of allergy. Severity of symptoms depends on exposure to allergens.
