PHAR3816 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin, Iron-Deficiency Anemia, Mean Corpuscular Volume
Document Summary
Anaemia is a reduction in red cell mass: Anaemias: decrease in the number of red blood cells (rbc) per cubic millimeter, or, decrease in haemoglobin concentration in blood to a level below the normal physiologic requirement for adequate tissue oxygenation. Hematopoiesis: main bone marrow production of cells in large bone mass (femur, pelvic structures) Pluripotent stem cell differentiation and proliferation mature, functional cells in peripheral blood: myelosuppresion - reduction of function of bone marrow. Red cells: normal ranges are defined by 95% of the population. Rbc: 3. 8-5. 5 x1012/l: haematocrit: 40-50% males 36-46% females, haemoglobin: 130-170g/l males 120-150g/l females, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (mchc): mirrors how coloured the cell is. If anaemic, cells look pale: 315-345 g/l: mean corpuscular volume (mcv): tells us the size of the cell: 83-101fl. Rbc"s circulate in blood for about 120 days. Normal range: 4-10 x 109/l: neutrophils and monocytes protect the body against bacteria and eat up small particles of foreign matter.
