PCOL2605 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Distal Convoluted Tubule, Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme, Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
Document Summary
27/8/18: the re(cid:374)i(cid:374)-angiotensin-aldosterone system is a major regulatory system within the body involved in homeostasis, it helps regulate a (cid:374)u(cid:373)(cid:271)er of fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s i(cid:374)(cid:272)ludi(cid:374)g. Angiotensinogen: a glycoprotein produced by the liver and released into circulation. Renin: is an enzyme secreted by the juxtaglomerular apparatus in the kidneys which hydrolyses angiotensinogen to produce angiotensin 1. A fall in na conc in renal tubules. Angiotensin converting enzyme: found in many tissues, particularly the lungs, converts angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 (identical to kinase 2) Angiotensin 2: octapeptide which exerts a number of effects including. Aldosterone is a hormone released from the adrenal cortex which acts on the distal convoluted tubule to: increase the reabsorption of sodium and water, increase the excretion of potassium. Increases the reabsorption of sodium and water (returned to the body) Produces vasoconstriction and an increase in peripheral vascular resistance. Causes the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex which acts on the kidney to conserve sodium and water.
