Week 12: court society in an age of mass communication. Take-home exercise becomes available on friday and is due the following friday. -there is an absence of study on court society in the literature. Period in european history between 14th and 17th centuries: period of consolidation of political and military power in absolutist national monarchies. Fuelled by european colonisation of africa, the americas, the middle east, india and east asia, as well as increased extraction from the population. Taxation: national monarchies became more efficient at taxing their populations. It is a fascinating spectacle, the rise of the princes in 16th century europe. One after another they spring up, first in italy and burgundy, then all over europe. Their dynasties may be old, and yet their character is new: they are more exotic, more highly coloured than their predecessors. They are versatile, cultivated men, sometimes bizarre, even outrageous the princes are everything.
