This week we are going to look at some of the issues that arise with probability. A major feature of this week"s work relates to randomness, as this is the basis of understanding probability. Probability is a mathematical concept that gives a mathematical measure to events where we cannot predict the outcomes with certainty. For example, if we toss a coin we know that there is a 50% chance that a heads will result. One way to understand this is to look at the long term frequency. If we toss the coin many times, in the long run we will get a head for half of the tosses. We can be sure about this (if the coin is fair) but we cannot predict which outcome (heads or tails) will result for each toss.
