Latin:tortus twisted or crooked i. e. conduct which deviates from the right path it is twisted and crooked when it ought to be straight and true. In law, a tort means a civil wrong-a breach of a duty imposed by law. Tort law is concerned with compensation for damages for civil wrongs suffered as a result of another"s acts or omissions. A tort is a civil wrong which the law will redress with an award of damages. In effect the law prescribes minimum standards of conduct outside the law of contract, e. g. driving a motor car: lifting goods onto a building site, giving advice. Remember the law of torts is derived in the main from the cases. Are statutory modifications and these will be mentioned as we proceed. Negligence major tort and most litigation concerns this tort.
