3 levels:
Observation & participation = physical level 9e.g. noise, environmental barriers)
Understanding and awareness = intelligence level (e.g. cross cultural barriers, linguistic
barriers, organisational barriers)
Acceptance = emotional level (e.g. emotional barriers, experimental barriers)
Barriers to communication
= anything that hinders the process of communication at any of the 3 levels
Types of communication barriers
Physical
Linguistic - static
Emotional
Experiential
Cross-cultural barriers
Organisational barriers
Physical barriers
Time = rushing to complete a conversation
Environment = furniture placement, office arrangement/space
Comfort = uncomfortable chairs or placement of furniture
Noise = inability to hear properly
Distractions = others in vicinity
Linguistic barriers
Be aware of semantics (meaning of words and the way sentence are phrased)
Do not use jargon or complicated terms
Be aware that not everyone has the same level of language skills
Use words carefully as they have positive and negative connotations
Static (occurs when we speak in a way that is distracting or not fluent)
Emotional barriers
Fear/anxiety
Suspicion
Uncertainty
Distrust
Experiential barriers
= based on previous experiences or experiences shared by others '
To overcome this, trust and credibility need to be established early
Cross-cultural barriers
May be a result of:
Cultural beliefs
Values
Norms
