Document Summary

Orientation of embryo - cranial, caudal, left, right, dorsal, ventral. Neural tube = brain and spinal cord in developed cns. Notochord induces overlying ectoderm to proliferate and differentiate. Neural plate moves to have neural folds + a neural groove. Neural folds then come together to fuse and zip up towards cranial end and then caudal end. This turns the neural groove into the neural tube. Ectoderm then grows over the top so that the neural tube is within the mesoderm (central within the embryo). Notochord also specialised to become neural crest cells within the mesoderm as well. Failure to zip up causes spina bi da or excencephaly. Take folate when pregnant to reduce incidence of this. Paraxial mesoderm next to notochord = axial skelton, voluntary muscle, parts of dermis (from somites). Intermediate mesoderm = urinary system, some of genital system lateral plate mesoderm (around rest of embryonic plate) = smooth muscle, bone, cartilage, cv system.
