Comparing photosynthesis and respiration:
Respiration
o Energy in carbon bonds of carbohydrates
o Reduces NAD+ to NADH
o Oxidized to make ATP, reducing oxygen to water
Photosynthesis
o Light energy
o Electrons excited from water (releasing O2)
o NADPH, ATP produced
o CO2 fixed
The biological energy cycle
Photosynthesis and respiration operate simultaneously in the light, whilst
at night ONLY respiration occurs.
All of life depends on the input of light energy into the food chain via
photosynthesis.
Photosynthetic organisms
All autotrophs, e.g. plants, algae, some bacteria.
Not all photosynthesis involves the oxidation of H2O to O2
Some prokaryotes oxidise H2S to S
